An AI search optimization checklist for service businesses

Twelve checks you can run in an afternoon to see whether AI assistants can read and describe your business correctly.

Illustrated cover for the article: An AI search optimization checklist for service businesses

Use this checklist before you spend anything on AI search. Most items are free to fix.

  1. robots.txt doesn't block the AI crawlers you want (for example GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot).
  2. Your firewall or bot protection isn't silently challenging those crawlers.
  3. The homepage says what you do and where in the first two sentences.
  4. Each service has its own page with a descriptive title.
  5. Prices or price ranges are written in text, if you publish them.
  6. Organization or LocalBusiness schema matches what's visible.
  7. FAQ answers are on the page, not only in schema.
  8. Your business name is spelled the same way on your site and profiles.
  9. Key pages load without requiring JavaScript to show text.
  10. Comparison and 'best for' questions have honest answers somewhere on your site.
  11. Contact details are in plain text.
  12. You can see AI referral traffic as its own channel in analytics.

Clarity

Ask ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity to describe your business. Wherever the answer is wrong or vague, trace it back to a page you can fix.

White hat SEO vs black hat SEO: our position

White hat SEO

White hat SEO follows search engine and AI platform guidelines: useful content, honest markup, open crawl access and links people choose to give.

Black hat SEO

Black hat SEO tries to trick ranking systems with things like hidden text, link schemes, cloaking, fake reviews or bot traffic. It can work briefly, and it can get a site penalized or quietly ignored.

To be clear: we don't do black hat. No spam, no hacks, no shortcuts that risk penalties. AI search is a young and growing field, and we make it our job to stay ahead of every new legitimate technique. Follow the blog for free tips as we find them. Read the blog →
